Oil, Sudan's biggest non-renewable resource, is being bled from under the feet of some of the world's poorest people and will soon be piped round the Nuba Mountains on its way to the north, when a 1600km pipeline from Bentiu to Port Sudan is finally completed.

The National Islamic Front (NIF) government is determined to complete its new oil pipeline because of its importance to staying in power. It has found backing from China and Malaysia, but vital components of the project - in both exploration expertise and specialised hardware - have come from Canada, Britain and Germany. Austria's big petrochemical company OMV and Sweden's Lundin oil companies are also involved, and Germany's Mannesmann combine has provided 500km of the pipe. Total of France is waiting in the wings to resume oil and gas exploration.

The Government of the Sudan agreed on 22 May 1999 to authorize the United Nations to send a Humanitarian Assessment Mission to the SPLM/A held areas of the Nuba Mountains. This assessment took place from 21 to 24 June 1999.

التجمع الوطني و حقوق النوبة السياسية

تبدأ في السادس من سبتمبر القادم جلسات المؤتمر الثاني للتجمع الوطني الديمقراطي في العاصمة الإرترية، أسمرا. و هذا اجتماع تاريخي سيلعب دوراً هاماً في إمكانية تحقيق مطالب الشعب السوداني المتمثلة في الديمقراطية و العدالة. أما بالنسبة للنوبة، فإن المؤتمر سيكون حدثاً فاصلاً فيما يختص بتطورهم السياسي.

فلقد ظل النوبة لسنوات عديدة منذ بزوغ فجر الاستقلال في 1956، يلعبون دوراً هاماً في تاريخ السودان. فلقد ساهموا اقتصادياً و سياسياً و عسكرياً و فكرياً في تكوين السودان الحديث. و في السنوات الأخيرة أصبح النوبة جزءاً لا يتجزأ بل و العمود الفقري للمقاومة المسلحة و تحملوا أعباء تلك المقاومة و الحملات الانتقامية التي تقوم بها الحكومة السودانية. و اليوم نجد النوبة يحاربون في أربع جبهات: في منطقة جبال النوبة نفسها و في جنوب السودان و شرقه و منطقة النيل الأزرق. و لقد ساهم النوبة في عملية بناء السودان الحديث بنفس القدر الذي ساهمت به أي مجموعة أخرى في السودان،  بل و أكثر.
