Peace can never come too late if Sudanese politicians are serious about finding a comprehensive peace settlement to the longest conflict in Africa today. Many fear that our conflict might drag on well into the next century or even it may end up with the disintegration of the country.

In his recent visit to Britain , cdr Yousif Kowa Mekki, the Nuba leader and the Governor of South Kordofan met British Government Officials in the Foreign Office, Department of International Development and also lobbied Members of British Parliament in the House of Common. He clarified the Nuba position and the terms the Nuba would be prepared to lay down the arms for a comprehensive peace settlement. The Kau Tragedy is a story written by Abbas Mustafa Sadiq. The story - in addition to A Village on the Nile, also written by the same author - was said to have earned him a precious prize from the German Broadcasting Voice. Reflecting the cultural ceremonies in the area, illiteracy, impoverishment and drought, The Kau Tragedy is centred on a young man, called Hirbu, from the Nuba Mountains. Hirbu, so the story runs, prepared himself bodily and psychologically to announce his betrothal to a local girl named Sara. In the day of his engagement, Hirbu decorated his face with coloured material, put a copper bracelet on his wrist, took his ax-like stick, put on a leopard skin around his waist and hang a necklace - full of glittering beads - around his neck.

Human Rights Abuses

In an attempt to destroy Nuba rebels in South Kordufan, and to close down the air-strips in the Nuba Mountains, which are the only access available to the outside world, the Government army has now intensified its military operations in the region. This is backed up by the use of Antonovs which are now used routinely to bomb villages and schools. In addition heavy artillery is being used indiscriminately to drive people out of their homelands.

In May Suleiman Rahhal, Director of International Nuba Coordination Centre and myself travelled to Slovenia to attend several meetings arranged by best selling Slovenian writer Tomo Kriznar, who has been campaigning on behalf of the Nuba in central Europe. Suleiman Rahhal was recieved most warmly by the the Sloveian government, and his meeting with State Secretary Franco Juri was shown on Television news. He also met with Eva Tomec, head of the Human Rights division.
